GWM launches HAVAL H6 PHEV with Hi-4 hybrid all-wheel drive technology

19/03/2026

Johannesburg – GWM has strengthened its electrified vehicle offering in South Africa with the introduction of the HAVAL H6 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid SUV that blends electric efficiency with long-distance capability and intelligent all-wheel-drive performance.

Positioned within the established HAVAL H6 range, the new model retains the practicality and family-focused appeal that has helped make the H6 one of the country’s most recognisable SUVs, while introducing a new level of electrified performance and advanced technology.

Familiar design with a modern edge

Visually, the HAVAL H6 PHEV maintains the bold styling associated with the H6 line-up. An intricately patterned front grille, slim headlamps, and distinctive LED daytime running lights give the SUV a confident road presence while reinforcing its modern, tech-focused character. The overall design strikes a balance between sporty styling and everyday usability, aimed at drivers who want both practicality and contemporary SUV appeal.

Hi-4 Hybrid powertrain

At the core of the new model is the GWM Hi‑4 (hybrid) drivetrain, an advanced plug-in hybrid system that pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors to create an intelligent all-wheel-drive configuration. In its most powerful form, the system delivers 268 kW and 760 Nm, while the 2WD derivative in the range offers outputs of 240kW to 240 kW and 540 Nm.

The Hi-4 system manages torque distribution between the front and rear axles to optimise traction and efficiency, allowing the SUV to deliver strong acceleration and stable handling across a variety of road conditions.

Electric commuting, long-distance flexibility

ne of the key advantages of the HAVAL H6 PHEV is its ability to operate as both an electric vehicle for short trips and a hybrid for extended journeys.

The SUV can travel up to 106 km on electric power alone (NEDC), enabling many daily commutes to be completed without using the petrol engine. When both power sources are combined, the vehicle offers a total driving range exceeding 1 000 km, reducing range anxiety on longer trips.

Plug-in hybrids are steadily gaining traction in South Africa as motorists look for practical ways to adopt electrified mobility without sacrificing driving range.

Safety and driver assistance

Safety is another major focus for the new model. The HAVAL H6 PHEV carries an array of safety features supported by an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

Features include a 540-degree panoramic camera system, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane assistance systems, driver fatigue monitoring, and electronic stability control. Multiple airbags, run-flat tyres, and a full-colour head-up display further enhance occupant protection and driver awareness.

Connected cabin technology

Inside, the cabin reflects GWM’s focus on digital integration and connectivity. The SUV is equipped with the latest Coffee OS, the brand’s intelligent infotainment platform.

The system incorporates a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a nine-speaker audio system. Front and rear USB charging ports further enhance convenience for occupants.

Comfort for everyday driving

Comfort and practicality remain central to the H6 formula. The plug-in hybrid variant features electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, and rear seats with a centre armrest and cup holders.

These features contribute to a refined cabin environment designed for both daily commuting and longer family journeys.

Warranty and ownership package

The HAVAL H6 PHEV will be sold through GWM South Africa dealerships nationwide and is backed by a comprehensive ownership package.

Coverage includes a 7-year / 200 000 km warranty and a 7-year / 75 000 km service plan. Service intervals are set at 12 months or 15 000 km. The PHEV models also benefit from an eight-year or 150,000 km high-voltage battery warranty, while seven years of roadside assistance adds further peace of mind for owners.

According to Floyd Ramabulana, Head of Marketing at GWM South Africa, the model represents a significant step in the company’s electrification strategy. “The HAVAL H6 PHEV combines hybrid efficiency, long-range capability and intelligent all-wheel-drive performance in a single package,” he said.

“It reflects GWM’s commitment to delivering advanced electrified vehicles that meet the evolving needs of South African motorists.”
